CHECK YOUR LABELS...Harriet, Fashion Roundtable’s Textiles Researcher and lead on The Great British Wool Revival explored a range of luxury boutiques and outlets in London last week.
Hear Harriet speaking about this issue in detail and her tips on how to check your labels while out shopping.
She was surprised to see from high street all the way through to luxury, how many synthetic garments and blends (a natural fibre blended with a synthetic) are being sold and considered as a luxury item.
These garments have the same level of biodegradability as synthetic garments, meaning that they can not degrade into the environment as there is no way to separate these fibres once they have been blended together. This also means that these clothes won’t keep you warm in the winter in the same way that a 100% natural fibre will, such as a British wool jumper.
So, what do we really mean when we talk about luxury?
At The Great British Wool Revival and Fashion Roundtable, we define luxury as clothing made from high-quality natural materials, supported by a value chain that follows best practice and honours heritage craftsmanship from soil to soil. A garment created with these principles should last a lifetime and perform exactly as it promises. For example, a wool jumper should genuinely keep you warm, not just look beautiful and stand the test of time.
If we can ask one thing of you at this time of year, it’s to CHECK YOUR LABELS when you shop. Take a moment to look at the fibre content and composition on the care label, it will help you make clear, informed choices and invest in garments that will maintain their quality for years to come.
Share your labels on your stories and posts, and tag #GreatBritishWoolRevival to join this month’s campaign, helping us all make wiser and more informed choices.
Be sure to hide any brand names or product codes to respect the privacy of individual purchases, this isn’t about calling out specific people or labels, but highlighting a broader systemic issue that impacts the entire fashion value chain.
