VAT, Customs, and Goods Movement

Check when you can account for import VAT on your VAT Return from 1 January 2021: Information has been added about accounting for VAT if you do not know the full customs value of goods and using someone to import goods on your behalf.

Customs, VAT and Excise UK transition legislation from 1 January 2021

  • The Travellers’ Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions (EU Exit) Regulations 2020 has been added, also added links to primary legislation and SIs that were laid to prepare for a potential no-deal scenario previously but still apply in whole or in part for 1 January 2021.

  • Statutory Instruments has been updated to include ‘The Customs (Northern Ireland) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020’.

  • Tariff Statutory Instruments and reference documents have been updated to remove Reference Document for relief for goods processed in Northern Ireland and returned to Great Britain or the Isle of Man

Changes to approved exporter authorisations from 1 January 2021: Approved exporter authorisations issued in the UK will not be valid in EU countries from 1 January 2021.

Defra update on GB-NI authorised trader self-identification: Defra are working to compile a list of businesses that can take advantage of the authorised GB-NI trader 3 month grace period

Sub-sector specific information – trade and designated standards

Designated standards: Links to designated standards from 1 January 2021 added for air conditioners and comfort fans, circulators, dishwashers, domestic ovens and range hoods, electric motors, power supplies, radio equipment, standby and off mode, transformers, tumble dryers and vacuum cleaners.

Trading internationally in rough diamonds from 1 January 2021: Updated to show what documents you need when importing or exporting rough diamonds from 1 January 2021 

Freight 

Get clearance to leave a UK port for commercial vessels from 1 January 2021: If you’re the ships’ master (or their agent) of a commercial vessel, you will need to get clearance to leave a UK port.
